From survival mode to
emotional peace

The Perinatal Peace Project warmly welcomes women across Coventry, Warwickshire and surrounding areas to compassionate, trauma-sensitive support designed to help you feel heard, understood and emotionally safe.

Where are you on your perinatal journey?

  • Planning Pregnancy & Birth
  • Processing Your Birth Experiences
  • Postnatal & Parenting Support

A more accessible, supportive and
down-to-earth approach

Built on decades of experience in Nursing, Midwifery and perinatal wellbeing, The Perinatal Peace Project was created to make specialist emotional support more accessible for women during pregnancy and early motherhood.

My approach is gentle, practical and free from judgement – without long waiting lists, unnecessary complexity or endless cycles of therapy.

As a specialist Perinatal Hypnotherapist my blended approaches of hypnotherapy, mindfulness, meditation and nervous system regulation techniques-all help you move away from survival mode and towards greater calm, confidence and emotional balance.

Meet the founder of
The Perinatal Peace Project

Based in my home area of Nuneaton, Warwickshire, the project supports women across Coventry, Warwickshire and surrounding areas… and further afield via online support.

I am Bernie Allport, a wife, mother of two wonderful adult children, nanna and hypnotherapist, with a lifelong career in Nursing, Midwifery and perinatal emotional wellbeing.

Alongside my professional experience, I also have lived experience of birth trauma and injury. As my own training, knowledge and understanding grew, I realised just how many women are left feeling unheard, unsupported and unsure where to turn.

I founded The Perinatal Peace Project to help bridge that gap… offering you compassionate, personalised support as you gradually move away from fear, overwhelm and unresolved trauma towards greater peace, confidence and emotional balance.

My Orthopaedic (ONC) and General Nursing (RGN) training grounded me in good, basic, holistic care – the importance of which has remained with me at every career direction.

Ironically, I was disappointed to miss out on an Obstetrics placement during my nursing training. So, being a little nosey and very determined, I decided to pursue full Midwifery training instead… and happily remained there until my recent retirement.

Over the years, I worked across every area of Midwifery, spending my final 16 years as a Caseload Midwife, where I developed a particular passion for birth preparation and supporting women through homebirth.

It was during this time that funding opportunities introduced me to hypnosis relaxation for birth, and I was completely hooked!

My own hypnobirthing business, Time 4 Birth, gave me the privilege of supporting couples as they prepared for calmer, more confident births. Along the way, I became increasingly aware of how previous trauma often shaped fear, decision-making and emotional wellbeing during pregnancy and birth.

This inspired me to train in the TBR (Traumatic Birth Recovery) 3-Step Rewind approach, before further expanding my knowledge during the Covid pandemic with a Certificate in Perinatal Emotional Wellbeing, alongside additional training in hypnotherapy, mindfulness and meditation.

Completing my Level 3 Diploma in Hypnotherapy (TBR 3-Step Rewind & Perinatal Hypnotherapy), fully accredited by Think Tree, directs me to share the offerings of The Perinatal Peace Project here today:

  • By supported listening to your feelings, with validation.
  • Trauma-sensitive timings, without rushing you.
  • Working with YOUR Choice of topic.
  • Guiding you in your planning for imminent change.
  • Always a forward-focus approach towards your empowerment.

I am also a lifelong member of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM).

Above all, I believe that nervous system regulation sets the foundation for good parenting, which in turn creates families who cope and support each other when life throws curved balls.

This belief is rooted not only in my professional life, but also in the things that bring balance and joy to my own time with my extended family, dancing and dance holidays, Nordic walking, motorhoming, volunteering within a hospital wellbeing service and maintaining my own meditative mindfulness practices to help keep life grounded and balanced.

Who I support

Wherever you are on your perinatal journey, you don’t
have to navigate it alone.
Whether you’re:

  • Planning a pregnancy
  • Preparing for birth
  • Processing a previous birth experience
  • Parenting through early motherhood

…you’re welcome here.

I support women across Coventry, Warwickshire and the surrounding areas, as well as clients anywhere who would like to work with me Live online. I also welcome Dads, grandmas, doulas and healthcare professionals, recognising that supporting others can leave its own emotional impact. Vicarious trauma deserves to be acknowledged with the same compassion and care.

At the heart of The Perinatal Peace Project is a simple belief:

You deserve to feel heard, supported and emotionally safe.
You don’t need a diagnosis, a label or to be in crisis before reaching out.

Sometimes, simply having the space to be listened to with compassion, understanding and without judgement is where healing begins.

How can I help?

I work with women experiencing a wide range of emotional and perinatal challenges, due to…

Previous

Unresolved birth trauma of physical or emotional nature.

Babyloss at any stage.

Current

Fertility/pre-conception anxieties; hyperemesis gravidarum (HG); difficult antenatal diagnoses or care pathways; antenatal anxiety and depression; new physical birth injury or emotional trauma; life-changing emergency birth experiences; NICU journeys and complex babycare; feeding traumas; relationship strain whilst adapting to new mother role.

Future

Fear surrounding induction or interventions.

Coping around breech birth decisions.

Planning for care pathways next pregnancy.

All work with you is 1-1 whether in person or live online.

Look out for group Perinatal Peace circles if you wish to connect with others in-person or explore your questions.

How…

Debrief

No longer recommended soon after an event… rather a “psychological first aid”. Clinical details matter… but so do your feelings and care experiences.

My “Debrief with relief” supports this style and validates with clarity after any perinatal event or procedure. It helps you prepare for clinical debrief with healthcare professionals, without re-traumatising.

One session.

Personalised recording to support your intentions.

Find your peace.

3 Step Rewind

A brief intervention of deep relaxation, allowing the sirens in your brain to switch off from the confusion, panic and fear that you may still be feeling after any traumatic event.

Over 3 separate sessions calm your nervous system, use your own language and project your focus forwards to lift the heavy weight of associated traumatic thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

Personalised recordings to support your progress between our appointments. Break your trauma pathway. Power up your long term memory with healthier messages.

Regain bonding, babycare confidence, family time, future plans.

Anxiety or depression

Your choice. Your feelings. This can be evident in Antenatal or Postnatal time.

Over 3 or 4 sessions – explore what keeps you in the loop of either anxious or depressive thoughts. Learn simple techniques to aid your return to peace and receive personalised recordings to aid your journey into peace.

Birth Preparation

With or without Pathway preferences creation (the old birth
plan). Hypnobirthing techniques attuned to trauma-sensitivity, hypnosis relaxation, involving your chosen advocate if you so desire.

My grounding and experience on this subject is vast – learn the biology of what happens throughout pregnancy, birth, feeding and postnatal and how you wish to apply this information over 2 – 4 sessions.

Relief of Pregnancy & Postnatal Symptoms

Learn how to use Hypnotherapy tools for ease of many common pregnancy and Postnatal ailments.

Pregnancy sickness; Hypertension; Restless legs; Lactation issues or feeding discomfort.

Learn how to stay calm and cope with heightened investigations of baby growth, placental function, blood anomalies & baby development etc.

One or 2 sessions. Customised MP3 recording for your practice.

Why?

Because you may feel:

  • Isolated
  • Unheard, coerced or excluded from decision-making
  • Prejudiced against
  • Unable to fully relax
  • Disconnected from yourself
  • Frightened by your thoughts or reactions
  • As though everyone else is coping better than you
  • Guilty for not enjoying motherhood in the way you expected
  • Unable to stop replaying events or worrying about what might happen next

If it feels like time to start the conversation

You are not alone.

The 2021 GOV.UK campaign “The first 1001 days” outlines this 2 year period from birth where babies achieve their most rapid emotional and physical wellbeing – neurologically charged by
good attachment.

Just at a point where you’re adjusting to motherhood, recovering from birth and finding yourself within a new identity!
Your struggle with intrusive thoughts, anxiety, guilt, fear, hypervigilance or emotional exhaustion is common among 20% of new parents – mostly all sleep-deprived! Largely under-reported due to shame, guilt, confusion and in a world of carefully curated “perfect parenting” on social media, it’s easy to believe you’re failing.

The truth is, you’re not failing.

You’re carrying more than anyone else can see. Perinatal anxiety, depression and birth trauma affect many families, yet so many women still question whether their experience was “serious enough” to deserve support… hence the 30% of new mums who describe parts of their pregnancy and birth journey as traumatic is also greatly under-reported and without validation.

You are not broken…

If your experiences continue to affect your thoughts, sleep, emotions or everyday life, then they matter.

Or perhaps you simply know something doesn’t feel right, but can’t quite find the words to explain it.

You do not need fixing.

Professional Integrity

Why my approach works

Your story is safe with me.

Living and working within close-knit local communities, I understand how important trust, discretion and confidentiality are.

My long career in the NHS has made it an easy transition for me to carve out safe standards and scope of practice, attuned to a Code of conduct and ethics, regular clinical supervision,
reflection and ongoing development, ensuring your safety and individual needs at all times.

You deserve
to feel heard.

Many women tell me they simply want someone who truly listens. Your experiences matter.

Before we think about moving forward, I want you to feel understood.

That’s why I offer a complimentary conversation so you can decide whether my approach feels right for you.

Accessible
support.

Everyone deserves access to compassionate emotional wellbeing support.

Alongside one-to-one sessions, community events and online support, I work with The Birth Republic C.I.C. to provide funded support for eligible women during pregnancy and the first two years after birth.

You lead the
journey.

There is no right or wrong place to begin. Whether you’ve experienced therapy before or this is your first step, we’ll work at your pace.

You choose what you share. You stay in control.

My role is simply to walk alongside you.

My Forward-focus approach embraces the Human Givens trauma and phobia philosophy, adapted within NLP (Neuro-linguistic programming) to provide Rewind therapy, originally for PTSD suffered by the returning military. This means that you do not need to revisit painful experiences in detail in order to achieve relief. It keeps your journey solution-focused, trauma-sensitive and led by you – no longer stuck in old thoughts and behaviours.

The answer is already within you.

The women I have worked with are surprised and empowered when they trust their own solutions, without suggestion or coercion to follow a particular action.

So often today, we lean towards external fixes rather than finding our very own inner guru.

Funding Support

If you are currently pregnant or have welcomed a baby within the last two years, you may also be eligible for funded support sessions through my collaboration with The Birth Republic C.I.C.

The National Lottery Community Fund has supported us for a second year, enabling specialist perinatal trauma, anxiety and depression support more accessible to the women who need it most.

You are not alone. Healing, peace and support are possible.

Getting Started

You are invited to a free 30 minute zoom call to explore any of these FAQ’s or unique questions you may have. If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy; recovering from physical and/or emotional injury or are struggling in your postnatal new mum role…………….this blended support may suit you.

There are so many ways these struggles can take hold in your life – some of which might show up as:-
Tension, inability to relax or sleep, exhaustion
Feeling disconnected from yourself
Frightened by your thoughts or reactions
As though everyone else is coping better than you
Guilty for not enjoying motherhood in the way you expected
Unable to stop replaying events or worrying about what might happen next
Loss of joy in your life
Feeling unheard or misunderstood by those around you
Relationship strains

Many of these aspects……and more….are our mind and body’s inbuilt protection system to alert and call us back to emotional balance – but they dont feel very nice or welcome!

So why not arrange your complimentary call and take your first step towards emotional peace?

If you are epileptic or have psychotic illnesses – along with their medications – unfortunately i cannot use blended hypnotherapy relaxation skills with you.

I listen to what you’re feeling right now – where you’re currently at in your perinatal journey.
Perinatal is the period of time from around conception up to 2 years post-birth.
There is no pressure to book anything.
Ask anything you wish.
Take time afterwards to process any new thoughts…..and you can always reply to my email at any time in the future – with further questions if required or to commit to booking a session(s).

This is a trauma-sensitive call – you will not be expected to divulge any of your story at this stage ( or any stage if this is your wish).
We learn together whether any of my trauma rewind, psychological first aid (Debrief), anxiety/depression support or symptom relief is fitting for your needs and wishes.
I can signpost you to other services which may suit you better.

Physical birth injury

Life-changing emergency birth experiences
NICU journeys & complex baby needs
Feeding traumas – heightened by guilt or judgement
Emotional overwhelm during your transition to mother role; loss of identity; relationship strain

There is no feeling too SMALL to prevent you taking up some support – events or symptoms do not have to BIG to be appreciated by my blended approach of hypnotherapy, mindfulness and meditative techniques. BRIEF interventions with lasting power.

I also support your Hypnobirthing course – 4 sessions
Suitable for Caesarean birth plans
I offer a unique “Creation of Pathway preferences”  (the old birth plan) – to help you address your wishes for pre-birth, postnatal & babycare……not just typically for the labour & birth!

No experience of therapy use is necessary at all in order for you to explore your peaceful option.
Hypnotherapy styles are purely held within deep relaxation and i ensure you can safely self-relax or teach you how to do this at the outset.
Good relaxation skills are key to emotional regulation in life.
My therapy is not deep, talking over endless hours of past issues – it is not counselling – and we will only work with what you wish to share.

A good question.

Hypnotherapy works with your chosen goals whilst in your relaxed state, accessing subconscious awareness – to create change that you desire. It has had many uses – clinically it draws from rules of the mind that relate to self-hypnosis (no-one can force you), new habits over old, one thought at a time (positive or negative), mind/body connection and focus…..you get more of what you focus on.

Goal-setting work; phobia control; quitting of addictive habits or behaviours; daily wellbeing all suit this style of therapy.

Hypnobirthing uses the rules of the mind to help you learn how body & mind interact, how relaxation into your subconscious creates change away from fear – leading to confidence and assertiveness while you plan your most important life event. Practical policy support is usually included and mostly couples work together, so that birthing partners know how to prompt, advocate and aid relaxation during testing moments.

Sessions

Your sessions may be in-person at a local venue to you or online via TEAMS platform
Either work really well – it’s your choice.

Either way – we both ensure a disturbance-free, private appointment style of 60 – 90 mins per session. So – even if you are at home, you need dedicated space & time and will require childcare provision if appropriate – as if you are travelling to attend an appointment.

We always commence with you – your feelings, needs, progress since any last session.

I appeal to your chosen topic in session. By the nature of this work – there is always a relaxing section, a grounding back into reality of space and body and a takeaway MP3 recording to aid your practice and progress.

This is a hard answer to give, as i know this plan can be difficult, but………..this is really a relaxation session, with focus on your chosen hurdle – to resolve or improve.
Because you will want to “zone into” that focus – your mind can’t afford to become distracted or be “on-call” to anything else during a session.

So, babycare is always required by your trusted family member or friends whilst you are allowed your dedicated safe time for support. We cannot accommodate babies during this work.

This also holds if you are on a TEAMS session in your own home – treated as though you are away at an appointment.

They can, but usually don’t – like when you go to a hair, nail, Dr appointment or counselling session. It is good for you to use this dedicated “Me Time” for your own development and progress, where you can function in your chosen way.

Most partners’ support is very valuable in the background for you – by caring for home & family while you have your appointment – whether online or in-person.

Partners may book their own dedicated sessions if they wish. Sometimes couples work together, although there may be restrictions to this – always ask me.

This can be totally up to you, although some guides here might give clarity:-

Debrief with relief (psychological first aid)……….one session. 60 – 90 mins.

TBR 3 Step Rewind…………3 separate sessions of 60 – 90 mins each, 2- 4 weeks apart.

Funded anxiety/depression/trauma work………1 – 6 sessions at suitable intervals.

Anxiety/Depression course of 2 – 4 sessions.

Hypnobirthing course of 4 sessions, including Pathway preferences creation.

Customized Hypnobirthing/Trauma Rewind………..5 sessions

Pathway preferences creation…………one session. 60 – 90 mins if standalone.

Beyond these average suggestions – the choice is yours entirely; you may add sessions as you see fit or at any time in the future.

Funding and Fees

Standalone sessions are set at £65….each of 60 – 90 mins, whether online or
In-person. Each closes with a takeaway MP3, uniquely customised to you – a valuable resource to return to again and again.

Block sessions are set at:-
3 sessions for 3 Step Rewind at £190
4 sessions Hypnobirthing at £250
5 sessions Hypnobirthing with Rewind at £320

There is the option for payment plans.
Speak with me this is suitable for you.

I am delighted to collaborate with The Birth Republic C.I.C  to offer you anxiety and trauma resolution work under funded support.  Applications are welcome here if you are pregnant or your birth event is up to 2 years ago.

Professional Standards

Absolutely!

In and around our tightly-knit communities, i hold this to be very important indeed.
There can be crossover in places of work, conflict within families, spotting familiar faces out & about – you will never have any aspect of your work with me shared.

In a safeguarding capacity i obviously cannot claim confidentiality if to do so keeps you or anyone close to you at risk of harm……in which case we would discuss options around who needs to know, which services are available to you until consensus is reached.

Your safety within my standards and scope of practice are paramount.

I work within an ethical Code of conduct, receive regular supervision of practise and reflect within ongoing development in order to keep as up to date as possible for you.
Mind based work can be emotional and we are used to a wide range of emotions as you lift the heavy weight of emotional burden…..some people feel worse initially, as they process change.

Everyone experiences relaxation work in their own unique way – i guide you through at your own pace and we pre-determine how we might manage any instant distress to the process.

I hold a Diploma in Hypnotherapy qualification and am a TBR 3 Step Rewind practitioner.
I hold a Certificate in Perinatal emotional wellbeing, to be able to work with your chosen aspect of Perinatal distress.
I am a lifetime member of Royal College of Midwives (RCM), having practised in Midwifery for over 30 years.
I carry full public liability and personal insurance.

Common worries

Another good question!

We do worry about showing our emotions, but this is an area where you can feel accepted for feeling anything…….some people have tears of pure relief when they realise they have found an outlet for longstanding burdens; regrets for things they wished could have come sooner; sadness at their situation……we are used to the tears but validate where they come from.

Your main skill with this work is to learn emotional regulation – to strengthen and keep you safe in future times, so you will learn to make friends with sadness, anger, guilt, shame, frustration and embrace the changes away from them.

Never.
You lead.
You know what you need.

I guide with suitable language which appeals to your focus, laying it ready for your mind to absorb by repetition of the use of your individual MP3 recordings.

Practice is recommended in-between and long after sessions……the work is yours.
Change is incremental.

We get asked this a lot, as it tends to attract a preparation for birth only.
It is actually a set of techniques and approaches to enjoy a more fulfilled, relaxed pregnancy…..leading to your birth.

So the earlier the better!

I have had people start as early as 20 weeks……this utilises all the rules of the mind aforementioned, so you achieve calm, assertive, focussed decision-making and attract the best of care.

Equally i have had people start at 39+ weeks…..this is very birth oriented then but totally possible………..never too late!

TBR 3 step rewind is a brief relaxation intervention, allowing the sirens in your brain to switch off from the confusion, panic and fear that you may still be feeling after some traumatic event in your pregnancy life.

This may have occurred during your antenatal period, birthing time, postnatal period or during any feeding difficulties. It may be associated with having an ill baby or a baby loss within any of that time or in the first year postnatally, known as the Perinatal time.
The trauma may have been physical following a birth injury to you or your baby or it may have been emotional – it does not need to be big trauma that is recognised by hospital staff or PTSD pathways. If it makes you brood about it, unresolved after a few weeks and it is affecting any of your daily functions or sleep – then that is trauma and can easily be lifted by this technique.

The relaxation skills used are your own – the ability to relax the “fright, flight and freeze” centres of the brain are generally well accessed by most people. The alarm system in the brain (amygdala) is constantly alerting us, to try and protect us from previous recognised trauma (held in short-term memory in the hippocampus), however small that might have been – and we only have to think about that event or injury and it throws us right back to where, when, how it happened and who was there!

Our rational frontal cortex of the brain keeps trying to tell the amygdala that this is no longer a risk but the alarms are ringing so loud that the messages cannot get through and panic repeats itself. One of the known ways to manage this pathway of distress between the amygdala and hippocampus is to deeply relax, with guidance and deciding what portion you wish to work on and how you would like this to look and feel if you knew you could lift this heavy weight. This deep relaxation breaks the trauma pathway and allows new, healthier messages to be heard and stored in the long term memory. This lifts the heavy symptoms of trauma that can destroy bonding, feeding, parenting, relationships and future pregnancies.

By getting to a relaxed state in our mind, the constant chain of response which links our alarm system in the brain (amygdala) to our short-term memory (hippocampus) – is finally broken and allows our rational brain (frontal cortex) to appreciate some calm once again – relegating the “old” to long-term memory storage (cortex integration) and no further need for the alarm to keep going off.

Rewind does not remove the event from the book of your life ……you keep your story but not the bodily symptoms that have created anxiety, palpitations, sleeplessness, anger, guilt, shame, loneliness, sadness, exhaustion, fear, panic, jealousy, lack of motivation.
